One of the true public faces of jazz, the keyboard giant brought a stellar group of musicians to the JVC Jazz Festival Newport to help perform classics from his catalog, as well as recent reconfigurations of pop music.
()
The supergroup sounded remarkably communicative for a band on its second gig together. Bassist Holland, pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, saxophonist Chris Potter and drummer Eric Harland played a set of angular, thoroughly modern originals.
()
The founder and impresario of jazz at Newport has played a less frequently-seen role at his festivals: Pianist. He brings a handpicked set of musicians ranging from their twenties to nearly 80 for a rousing set of small-group swing.
()
The bandleader's intuitive hybrid of big band jazz, Argentinean folk rhythms and the modern classical idiom have won him devotion from many of today's hottest jazz musicians. He makes his Newport debut with his large ensemble Los Guachos.
()
An annual mecca for jazz enthusiasts, the festival has featured legends like Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday. Hear Dan Morgenstern, Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University.
